January 2023: big waves, had the place to ourselves

This is what you get in winter: dramatic landscapes and big waves
The panorama of Ramsey from Pen dal Aderyn (Bird Head): could run this part of the coast path every day and not get bored
Otto: happy to run, happy to sit around a bit
A little further round: the beach known as Lysgi II. The secret corner where shells collect
To the north, the beach of big boulders on Porth Melgan
And Purple Sandpipers in their traditional spot on the Ram’s Nose at high tide
Can’t believe we’ve not been to the St David’s lifeboat station before: well worth a look and great to talk to the lads on duty and get the first hand backstory
Rear view: shiny, shiny
Poles! Everywhere you go there are memorials to heroic airborne Poles
More WWII memorabilia: mines on the beach at Caerfai. Didn’t appear to deter the after work swimmers
The Cathedral in winter: always feels an unbelievable luxury to have such a place on the doorstep
I can’t believe they can heat it! Always seems warm and cosy though

September 2022

Seals….everywhere. In every little bay there are seal pups with anxious mothers wavering in the shallows…and further out the bulls patrolling.

This pup is just about big enough to be out on its own: looking a little bemused on Porth Sele beach as humans emerge from their tents.

The biggest collections of pups we saw in in the coves on the north coast: take the footpath over the hill from the YHA. Although you can get great, very close views of those right on the point of Pen dal Aderyn between St Justinian’s and Porth Henllys.

If you go to the north coast you can walk along to Carn Penberi in an hour or two.

The view back to Can Llidi from the top of Carn Penberi
And the coastline looking west from the bottom of Carn Penberi: with Choughs

In a cold North-westerly St Non’s bay is the place to sit in the sun. There’s a secret path directly down from the Chapel: a steep descent down a narrow gap in the cliff to a hidden corner of pebble beach.

September is good for mushrooms. A huge flush of Parasols decorated the coast path.

Winter

It’s July; the place is filling up with people and it’s scorching. I’m a bit nostalgic for the winter when it’s generally deserted and the ambience is more…bracing.

The height of Storm Eunice: Feb 2022. It’s not often one has to crawl round the coast path on all fours
Wilma surveys the aftermath of Eunice on Porth Sele

Hi guys

Welcome to HYG blog….

The Welsh Cobs have spent the winter in the fields along the lane to Whitesands: they’ll be back to Llandeilo for the summer soon.
